Start with a square. Double its base, then shrink its height by 3inch. The new rectangle's area is 40 square inches loarger than the area of the original square. How long are the sides of the square?

Area of square= x^2
Double the base and shrink height 3 inch.
New shape has sides 2x and x-3.
New shape area= 2x*(x-3)= 2x^2-6x
According to question, 2x^2-6x= x^2+40
On solving, x=10
