A box is to be formed from a rectangular piece of sheet metal by cutting squares measuring 5 inches on a side and then folding the sides. The piece of sheet metal is twice as long as it is wide. If the volume of the box is to be 1760 inches cubed, what are the dimensions of the original piece of sheet metal?

- 21 & 42 inches
If breadth of the rectangle=x+5+5=x+10 ,then its length=2(x+10)=2x+20
As this length includes two 5 inches side of a square,
so length of the box =2x+20-10= 2x+10
Width of the box=x and height of the box=5
Volume of the box=(2x+10)*x*5
= x^2+5x-176=0
(x-11)(x+16)=0, So x=11
Dimensions of the sheet, breadth=x+10=21 & length=2x+20=42
