  = 8 ft + S
  S is the sum of an infinite geometric series with first term 8 ft and common ratio 1/2.
  S = 8/(1 - 1/2) = 8/(1/2) = 16 ft
  Total distance covered = 8 ft + 16 ft = 24 ft
