- Let A = Anne, E = Eliza, K = Karen, T = Tom, P = Peter, J = Jack, _ = empty cottage.
From #6, Tom is next to an end cottage.
From #3, PKJ can't be in the end cottage next to Tom.
From #2, AE can't be in the end cottage next to Tom.
Hence, the end cottage next to Tom must be empty.
From #2 and #1, _A_ are in a row.
From #3, we have either PKJ or JKP in a row.
From #2 and #1, and the fact that there are three empty cottages, we know E is in the end cottage not next to Tom.
From #4, we know that J_A (or A_J) are in a row.
Just a couple quick tries will now show that the answer is:
_TPKJ_A_E
(Or if you prefer, the mirror image E_A_JKPT_ also works).
BTW, constraint 5 is unnecessary - we already know that from constraints 2 and 3. - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(4)
