Q. policeman is chasing a thief. Find the time required to catch
{A} policeman is 2 times faster.
{b} DISTANCE BETWEEN THEM IS 20 m
Read Solution (Total 20)

- Time required to catch thief can not be determined even by using both statements as difference between two speeds is required.
check....
If speed of thief is 5m/sec, then time taken will be 4 sec.
If speed of thief is 10m/sec, time taken will be 2 secs.
If speed of thief is 2m/sec, time taken will be 10 secs. - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(52) No(4)
- Time cannot be determined from these two statements as, we can determine that after the thief covers 20m and the policemen covers 40m the police could catch the thief, but we cannot determine how long will it take for the two to do that.

- Both the statement here are not sufficient to give the exact time. Here, it is not given that speed is taken in m/s,km/s etc. If we take thief is 1m/s and police is 2m/s then police caught the thief in 20 sec. But it is not the exact answer.Some people solved it like this. We have not any idea of the unit of the speed so we cannot answer it.

- Rel speed x
Distance is 20 m
Time= 20/x
Both are required - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(5) No(2)
- Both statement ....not sufficiency . Its depends on speed
let us thief speed= v
then policeman speed=2v
after 't" time & "x"police distance policeman catches him.
then rum time of thief is t1= (20+x)/v
then rum time of policeman is t 2= (20+x)/2v
when thief will catch then t1=t2
x/v = (20+x)/2v
x=20m
then
t=20/v
depend on speed. - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(0)
- data inadequate.
both the statements are not sufficient to answer the question. - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(0)
- both statement is required , first statement gives the info about their speed and second statement gives the info abt distance between them , S=D/T two is known to us , so we can find the third variable from it.....

- it must be 20 sec
as in 20 sec dis travelled by police is 40 m (20+20)&dis travelled by thief is 20 m bcz speed of police is double of speed of thief - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- both are possible

- Since the relative speed of policeman is 2k-k where k is some constt
so the time taken = distance/speed = 40/k so the value depends on k - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- Policeman is 2 times faster means 2m/s (police) and (1 m/s) thief. the distance btw both is 20 m. so if thief run 1 m more (means 21 m) than ploice cover (2 m) and if thief run 2 m more (means 22 m) than ploice cover (4 m) ................... so on. and in the end when the thief run 20 m more (means 40 m) than ploice also cover (40 m) . Thief caught . according to speed=distance/time => 2 m/sec = 40m / time => time= 40m / 2m/sec therefore time = 20 sec.

- Both statements are needed because time=distance/speed.
- 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(1)
- Sol:let thief velocity is v then policeman velocity is v1=2*v
Time required to chase the chief is =(relative distance )/(relative velocity)
so Time(T)=20/(v1-v)
=20/(2*v-v)
=20/v
if take value of thief is v= 1,2,3,4........m/s so on
therefore v=20,10,6.67,5...............m/s respectively

- Answer is D.
You cannot reach to a single solution using both the statements. - 7 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- Both the statement here are not sufficient to give the exact time.
because we have ratio of speed but we need exact values of speed. - 2 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
