Profit and Loss
A dishonest seller uses a weight of 800 gram in place of 1 kg and adds 20% impurities in sugar. What would be his profit percentage it he claims to be selling at the cost price?
Read Solution (Total 8)
-
- Let the actual price of 1Kg Sugar be x.
He is selling 800 gm of sugar out of which 20% is impurity . Thus pure sugar : (4/5)*800 = 640gm .
Now actual price of 640gm of sugar : ((640/1000)*x).
He sells 1kg at its cost price . Thus profit : (360/1000)*x
Thus profit : 36%
Ans: His profit percentage is 36% - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(13) No(8)
- let actual CP OF 1000gm is rs100
800gm costs = 80
but he selling 800 gm of sugar at rs 100
so he is gaining rs 20
profit for 800 gm is 20
actual CP for 800 is rs 80
therfore profit% is(20/80)*100 = 25%(ans) - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(8) No(10)
- 50%
As 800 gm. sugar contains 20% impurities,
Quantity of pure sugar in 800 gm =800*(100/120)=2000/3
If seller buys 1Kg. pure sugar at Rs.'y'=Cost Price, then
Cost price of (2000/3) gm=(2000/3)*y/1000= 2y/3
%of SP 'y' compared to (2y/3) =y*100/(2y/3) = 300/2= 150
So profit %= 50 - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(6) No(6)
- Since the shopkeeper uses 20% impurity, hence in the 800 gm which he really sells in place of 1000 gm, the original amount of pure material is
80% of 800 gm = 80/100 * 800 =640 gm
Hence gain% = (1000-640)/640 * 100= 56.25% - 7 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(2)
- CP of 1000g= $1000
Now he is selling 800g instead of 1000g.
In this 800g 20% is impurity.
So net pure amount of sugar he is selling= 800 - (20% of 800) = 640g
So CP of 1000g = $1000
Therefore CP of 640g = $640
As he is selling 640g at CP of 1000g , So SP of 640g = $1000
Therefore total gain for 640g = $(1000-640) = $360
Therefore total profit precentage = (gain in 640g/CP of 640g) *100 = (360/640)*100 = 56.25% - 7 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(1)

- there are 2 cases hidden in this particular question:
1. Cheating in terms of weight:
So, shopkeeper is selling 800 rs worth of product at 1000rs, so profit is rs 200
then profit percent would be =200*100/800 = 25%
2. Cheating in terms of impurities:
let's say we have 100 gm sugar, he is adding 20 gm impurity in it. But he is charging for this 20 gm of impurity also i.e. he is charging 20 rs more over 100rs ie 20% profit
Thus, total profit = 20+25=45% - 8 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(3)
- Has 800gm,sells as 1000gm.Let CP be Re1/gm
Out of 800gm 20% impurity.So 800(1-/5)=640gm sugar.CP=640.
SP=1000/-
Profit %=(360/640) * 100=56.25% - 5 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
