• suppose 8 teams are.. A,B,C,D,P,Q,R,S.
  We divide 8 teams into two pools
  POOL1 POOL2
  A P
  B Q
  C R
  D S
  POOL1 MATCHES:
  A Vs B==> A WINS
  C Vs D==> C WINS
  A Vs C==> A WINS
  ----------------
  3 MATCHES IN POOL1 AND WINNER IN POOL1 IS TEAM A.
  POOL2 MATCHES:
  P Vs Q==> P WINS
  R Vs S==> R WINS
  P Vs R==> P WINS
  ----------------
  3 MATCHES IN POOL 2 AND WINNER IN POOL 2 IS TEAM P.
  NOW THE FINAL WILL BE BETWEEN A AND P==> A WINS
  SO TOTAL MATCHES= NO. OF MATCHES IN POOL1+NO. OF MATCHES IN POOL2+FINAL BETWEEN A AND P...i.e(3+3+1)=7 matches in total.

• 7 matches. Consider a b c d e f g h teams. a and b needs 1 match similarly other 3 pairs need 3 matches. Now we have only 4 teams and for them 2 matches for 2 winners and finally one match. 4+2+1=7

  so..
  Let the teams be A B C D E F G H
  Let the winner be "A"
  A vs B--> A wins
  C vs D--> Let C wins
  E vs F --> Let E wins
  G vs H-->Let G wins.
  so now B D F H are out of tournament.A C E G are still in the tournament and up to now 4 matches are held.
  now
  A vs C --> A wins
  E vs F --->Let E wins... so here C and F are out.....In this round 2 matches are held.
  final match is A vs E----> A Wins......E is out of tournament.....in this round 1 Match was held.
  So totally 4+2+1=7 Matches are Played.
  Note: Here in question they asked total matches played .. so answer is 7
  if they asked .. how many matches winner played means....then the answer is 3 .

  then remaining 2 teams will play 1 match , so the total number of matches will be 7.

  from last a match organised then winner will play with next one
