Jack buys 18 sharpeners (white and brown) for rs. 100.If he pays 1 rupee more for each white than brown sharpeners.how many of white and how many brown sharpeners did he buy?

• it is simple funda of guessing.. and if the option given it is so easy..
  lets think x brown ones are there so the no of whites are 18-x.
  now each brown coast y and each white then coast y+1.
  so xy+(18-x)*(y+1)=100
  18y-x=82
  so one can easily say that y=5 and x=8
  we cant take more for sum expectation.
  now if brows are x and cost y then the total coast is xy=40 and
  the whites are 10 and they coast 1 rs more each so they coast 6 and 6*10 is 60 and
  60+40 is 100 so the sum satiesfies

  tot cost=100
  no of sharp.=18
  cost of white=cost of brown+1
  100/18=5.5...-(1)
  also 100%18=10...-(2)
  as cost of white is 1 more than that of brown
  from 1 int. value will be 5
  now remainder is 10 so 10 sharp. will be of cost (5+1)
  => 10*(5+1)+8*5
  =>10*6+8*5
  =60+40
  100
  white=10
  brown=8

  if he buys 8, then 8*5=40
  if he buys 10 brown sharpners with price 1 rupee more than white sharpners
  then 10*6=60
  so total 10+8=18 sharpners
  and 40+60=100 rupees....

  cost of brown=a
  x(a+1) + a(18-x) = 100
  x+18a=100
  put x=10 from option a=5

• @rajnandini the equation is 18y-x=82.. so 18*5 is 90 and 90-8=82 simple.. thats why 5 and 8 okk?
