Boats and Streams
Speed of boat in still water is 10kmph..if it travels 24km downstream,16km upstream in the same amount of time,what is the speed of the stream?
Read Solution (Total 5)
-
- Let the time be x.
Speed in still water(u)=10km/hr,speed of stream(v)=?
For downstream..
24/x=10+v
24=10x+vx ...(1)
For upstream..
16/x=10-v
16=10x-vx ....(2)
by (1)and (2)
we get x=2
and v=2
so Ans is 2km/hr

- time=d/s
time taken in downstream=time taken in upstream
24/(10+v)=16/(10-v)
solving this we get v=2
now,downstream speed=(10+2)=12
upstream speed=(10-2)=8
rate of stream=(downstream speed-upstream speed)/2
ans=2 - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(0)
- let the speed of stream is x kmph;
than
T1= 24/(x+10) time taken in downstream
T2=16/(x-10) time taken in upstream,
T1= T2,
24/(x+10)= 16/(x-10);
6x-60=4x+40;
2x=100
x= 50 kmph; - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(3)
- t (10 - x )= 16 => t = 16/(10-x)
t (10 + x) = 24 => t = 24/(10+x)
=> 16/(10-x) = 24/(10+x)
160 + 16x = 240 - 24x
40x = 80
x=2 (speed of stream)
... And time, t = 2 hours - 7 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- If the speed in downstream is a km/hr and the speed in upstream is b km/hr then
rate of stream or speed of stream =1/2(a-b)km/hr
So here a is 24 km/hr
b=16 km/hr
So speed of stream =1/2(24-16) - 7 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
