Ratio and Proportion
It has 20 liters of mixture containing milk and water in the ratio 3:5, replace 4 liters of mixture with 4 liters of water. What is the final ratio of milk and water?

- 20 litres of mixture contains milk and water in the ratio 3:5 means that 3/8 is milk and 5/8 is water.
If you remove 4 litres then you have 16 litres remaining.
Of this there will be 3/8 x 16 litres milk = 6 litres milk
And 5/8 x 16 litres water. ie Water = 10 litres
Assuming you meant to say that you would replace the mixture with 4 more litres of milk then you will then have 10 litres of milk( 6+4) and 10 litres of water in the mixture. The ratio would be 1 : 1.
On the other hand if you meant to say that you would replace the 4 litres removed with more water, then the new mix would be 6 litres of milk with 14 litres of water (10 + 4). The ratio would be 6 : 14 which then simplifies to 3 :7

- The total mixture quantity=20 litre.
so,milk = 20*(3/8) = 7.5
water = 20*(5/8) = 12.5
when 4 litre removed,water and milk will become less in same ratio
milk = 7.5 - (4*3/8) = 6 litre
water = 12.5 - (4*5/8) = 10 litre
when 4 litre water added ,
water amount = 10+4 = 14.
Therefore ratio becomes => 6/14 = 3/7
Hope this helps :) - 4 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
