Ratio and Proportion
A student put points P and Q on a line to the right of point X. Three times the distance from point X to point P is four times the distance from point X to point Q. What is the ratio of PQ:XQ?

as xp/xq = 4/3
so pq/xq = (xp-xq)/xq = (4-3)/3 = 1/3.. - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(0)

- 3:1
From given info, it is easy to see that Q is in the middle of P and X.
Let PQ = x and XQ = y.
To find: x/y
Given: 3*(x+y) = 4*(x)
That is (x + y) / x = 4 / 3
Applying dividendo,
y / x = 1 / 3
Or, x / y = 3 / 1
x:y :: 3:1
To those who don't know dividendo, it says that if
a/b = c/d, then
(a-b)/b = (c-d)/d
Similarly, componendo exists (which replaces the + with minus)
Also, componendo-dividendo says that, if a/b = c/d then
(a+b)/(a-b) = (c+d)/(c-d)
Applying these rules, solutions to ratio and proportions can be easily found out. - 13 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(7)
