• guys if u find the previous way to be tedious let me give u a more simple way of solving:
  if 35% of students passed then definitely 65% would have failed. rite!
  let the total no of students be x.
  so 65% of x=455 (i.e no of students failed)
  65/100 x X = 455
  SO X=455x(100/65)=700 students.

• TO solve this puzzle lets go by the options:
  a) 490 students appeared for examination.
  if so then 35% of them passed. so 35% of 490 s some decimal no so this option s not possible.
  llly for options c), d) too.
  b) 700 students appeared for examination. so 5% of them passed means 35% of 700 which s 245. so if we subtract the no of students passed i.e 245 from 700 we get 455 which gives the no of students failed. so option b) is the answer..

• ok! i am going to solve this question by using concept of percentage(basically i am going to use actual meaning of percentage )
  
  35% pass means 35/100=7/20 pass , means if total number of student was 20, then only 35% of 20 that is 7 passed ,means 20-7=13 failed , if 13 failed then 7 pass we know , means if 1 failed then 7/13 pass ,but according to the question 455 failed so 455*(7/13) will be passed after solving we get 245 (passed student ),now we need total student so just add (passed +failed) =245+455=>700 Ans.

  Total no of students passed is 35%, So
  7*35=245.
  
  So Total Students is equal to
  245+455= 700.
