  which means side=3
  so one face will have =3*3=9 small cubes
  from the 9 small cubes 8 are painted 2 or 3 sides..remaining is one

• The center square/cube will be painted on one face
  The 4 cubes on 4 sides of this center cube are painted on 2 faces
  The 4 cubes on the 4 corners of the center cube are painted on 3 faces
  
  But we still have to look at the center slice of the cube.
  Here we'll have a total of 4 center cubes with one face painted
  And, 4 edge cubes painted on 2 faces
  
  But this only adds to 26 cubes. The 27th cube is the very center of the Rubik's cube which is not painted at all.
  
  So, in total, 6 cubes are painted on 1 face and 1 cube is not painted on any face.
