- The concept that ELITMUS wants to test in this kind of question is simple understanding of fractions and integers.
The number of students must be an integer, so the total number of students as well as the number of students who play hockey, both values should be definitely integers.
Lets get clarity on the value of 28%.
28% of total students play cricket, so 28% of total students should be an integer.
(0.28) * total students = integer
One way of solving from here is using the options and checking which of the options satisfies this condition and eliminate the remaining.
The other way of solving this is converting 28% into a fraction.
28% is 7/25, so the answer must be a multiple of 25.
Eliminate all the options which are not multiples of 25.
So, any option without ending as 25, 50, 75, 00 is out.
Lets look at the second condition:
20% of the students play hockey, so 20% of the total students should be an integer.
(0.20 * total students) = Integer
The first method is again checking the options, but you have to check only for the remaining options after the checking of the first condition.
If you are still left with two options, pick the lowest one above 701.
The second method is converting 20% into a fraction, it is 1/5.
So, the total number of students should be a multiple of 5.
Check the options which are multiples of 5.
Anyway as the number should be a multiple of 25, it also will be a multiple of 5.
Now the next number after 701 which is a multiple of 5 as well as 25 is 725.
725 is the answer.

- l.c.m of 20 and 28 is 140.
so, no. of students are in the multiple of 140. nearest multiple of 140 slightly greater than 701 is 840.
thus 840 is the ans.......

- i think options that was available in exams are:- (a)750 (b)800 (c) 1000 (d)850

- 28% of 701= 100 (aprox)
20% of 701= 140 (approx)
last number is students in school who not play hockey or crickey= 701-(100+140)=461
exact number cant determine but answer will be more 461 .

- in this case exactly exact no. in need. and in statics we can not find at list numbers of student.
n(C)=28% and n(H)=20% but n(C u H)= More than 701
so cant solved

- what is the ans ????
- 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- 840 shud be the ans because lcm of 20 and 28 is 140 and 840 is a least multiple of 840 greater than 701
