first condition: If you put in one canary per cage, you have one canary too many.
=> x= y+1
second condition : If you put in two canaries per cage, you have one cage too many.
=> y = x/2 + 1
=> x = 2y - 2
Subtracting first from second :
0 = y-3
=>y=3
