Maths Puzzle
a,b,c are in continued proportion; b,c,d are also in continued proportion; if b:c = 2:3 and all
the four numbers are positive integers, what is the minimum possible value of (a+d)?

- Ans. Minimal possible value of (a+d) is 35
Solution.
a,b,c,d are in continued proportion, so
a/b = b/c = c/d = 2/3
=> a = (2/3)*b , b = (2/3)*c , c = (2/3)*d
=> a = (2/3)*(2/3)*(2/3)*d = (8/27)*d
=> d = (27/8)*a
As all the four numbers are positive integers, so
minimal values of a = 8 giving d = 27
Hence a + d = 35 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(1)
