- Supposing Peter’s age is X and Paul’s age is Y
We have X + Y = 35.. (1)
Now when Peter was Paul’s age which means (X - Y) years ago
Peter would have been X - (X - Y) = Y which is Paul’s age now
Paul would have been X - (X - Y) = 2Y - X
We have been given that Peter’s age is twice what Pauls was,
so X = 2(2Y - X) = 4Y - 2X which gives 3X = 4Y………………….. (2)
For ease of use if X + Y = 35; then 3X + 3Y = 105.
I.E. 4Y + 3Y =105 from (2) above
7Y = 105
Y= 15; X = 20

- let peter&paul present ages be x&y respetively
so x+y=35
from question it is clear that peter is older
so let us assume m years back peter
y=2(y-m)
so y=2m
and
y=x-m
x-m=2m
x=3m
from x+y=35
m=7
hence x=21 and y=14 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(4) No(2)
- Peter is 21 yrs old currently....When paul was 7 yrs old at that time Peter would be 14 yrs old as per the question...and now peter is 21 yrs old and Paul is 14.
