I had about Rs.14.40 in one rupee coins and 20 paise coins when I went out for shopping.
When I returned, I found that number of 20 paise coins and 1 rupee coins are exactly as 1
rupee and 20 paise coins respectively, that I had originally. I came back with one third of
what I had started out with. How many one rupee coins did I have initially?
A) 10
B) 12
C) 14
D) 16

- Answer is 14
Solution : Let x be number of 1 rupee coins and y be number of 20 paise coins initially.
Initially : 1x + .2y =14.40
Finally : 1y + .2x = 4.80 (as number of coins interchange)
Solving we get, x=14 and y=2
Therefore there was 14 one rupee coins and 2 20 paise coins initially. - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(4) No(0)
- Let's assume X as 1 rupees and Y 20 paise coins.
Before Going shopping had (100 X + 20 Y) paise ---- 1
Upon return left amount (100 Y + 20X) paise. ----- 2
as we know, one-third of the original amount is left
Therefore (100 Y + 20 X) = (1/3)(100 X + 20 Y) ----- 3
Simplifying equation 3, we have X = 7Y ----- 1
If Y =1, then X = 7 sum would be 7.20 (which is not true. Sum shoud come 14.20)
If Y=2, Then X=14 Sum is 14.40. This is true answer
After shopping, He has 2 one Rupee Coints and 14 20 paise coins.
Sum comes to 2 + (14/5) = 4.80... this is 1/3 of the orginal amount - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(3)
- Let's assume he had X coins of 20 paisa and Y coins of Rs 1.
Then
20x+100y = 3*(100x+20Y)
280 x= 40 y
y=7x
For Rs 14, x=2
then y =14
so he had 14 coins of Rs. 1 initially. - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(0)
- lets take the 1/3 rd of 14.40
in (12/3)=4
240/3=80
so after shopping he had 4rs80 paise.
as said in the above problem no of 1 re coins(intially)=no of 20 piase coins
so as shown in the below table consider the following we will get the answer
rs paise
3 9(20*9)=180+3
2 14(14*20)=280+2=480.so intially 2 20 paise coins and 14(1 re) coins.

- initially 100x+20y=1440
after spending (100x)/3+(20y)/3=480
if we suppose initially he had 12 coins of 1rs and 12 coins of 20p then total is 14.40
after spending he is left with 1/3 amount which means 4.80rs
12 coins of 1 rs divided by 3=4 coins of 1 rs
12 coins of 20p divided by 3=4 coins of 20 p
which makes rs4.80
SO ANSWER IS 12 COINS OF 1rs and 12 COINS OF 20p - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
