A ladder leans against a vertical wall. The top of the ladder is 8 m above the ground. When the bottom of the ladder is moved 2 m farther away from the wall, the top of the ladder rests against the foot of the wall. What is the length of the ladder?

  let length of ladder =y
  distance from bottom of ladder to the bottom of wall=x
  if x is increased by 2m the top of the ladder rests the ground
  therefore y=x+2
  x^2+8^2=y^2
  now
  replacing y by x+2
  x^2 + 8^2=(x+2)^2
  which gives us x=15
  therefore y=17

• this case follow right angle triangle pattern. in which one side is 8m other small side is 2m and the hypotenous will be lengh of ladder.
