- 'm not sure what you mean by "good" standard deviation.
Without a calculator, we can tell which will give the highest standard deviation, and which the lowest.
Standard deviation measures spread in a set of data - the "average distance from average".
The first two sets both add to 7, and have 5 pieces of data in them, so they both average to 7/5 = 1.4.
In the second set, more of the data is further from 1.4 than in the first set, so the second set has a higher standard deviation.
The third set has all its data very close to 1.4, so it will have a lower standard deviation than set 1.
So, from lowest to highest standard deviation:
