A closed cylindrical tank contains 36 pie cubic feet of water and its filled to half its capacity. When the tank is placed upright on its circular base on level ground, the height of water in the tank is 4 feet. When the tank is placed on its side on level ground, what is the height, in feet, of the surface of the water above the ground?
Read Solution (Total 7)

- 36 pie cubic feet of water and its filled to half tank's capacity...
volume of tank = 72 Pie cubic feet
height of tank = 4*2 = 8 feet ( since tank is placed upright on its circular base on level ground, the height of water in the tank is 4 feet.)
72 pie = pie * r2*8
r2=9
r = 3 feet
When the tank is placed on its side on level ground....
the height of water surface from ground = radius of tank ( tank is filled half of its capacity )
so ans is 3 feet.. - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(36) No(0)
- Its simple...
What given Volume = 36
Height = 4ft
Volume = Pi* r2 * h
36 = Pi*r2 * 4
r2 =9
r = 3
So the radius is 3 which means the diameter is 6.
This is what the ques asked.

- can i clarify that where does this 'pi'(22/7) value been to.....

- We know that the volume of cylinder = πr2h
Given tank hight = 4ft.
⇒ πr24 = 36π
⇒ r = 3
So the radius is 3 which means the diameter is 6.
As the cylinder is filled to initially exactly half of the capacity, When this cylinder is placed on its side, Water comes upto the height of the radius.
So water comes upto 3 ft

- According to CHAITANYA
if r2 = 9
then r = 4.5 not 3 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(45)
- given the cylinder is half filled ,it will be half filled in both the cases,whether standing on circular base or its side..hence radius of the cylinder is the answer i.e. 3 feet as calculated by Chaitanya.
