What is the value of x for the following equation
(x^2-4)/(x-2) = 4

Solution

On solving the equation
(x^2-4)/(x-2)=4
(x+2)(x-2)/(x-2) = 4
x+2 = 4
x = 2
but this value does not satisfy the initial equation so can not be a solution

(x^2-4)/(x-2) = 4---(1)
here,x-2 != 0
x!=2

after solving the eq-(1)
we get, x=2, but this is not possible
so, it has no solution

(x^2-4)/(x-2) = 4
(x+2)(x-2)/(x-2)=4
x+2 = 4
x = 2

When x = 2 is substituted in the original equation, it causes a division by zero in the original equation. So x = 2 is an extraneous solution.

Since the only possible solution causes division by zero, this equation really has no solution.

for L.H.S. domain of function (x^2-4)/(x-2), x can never equal to 2.
because denominator becomes 0 in that case.
now a/q,
=>(x-2)(x+2)/(x-2)=4
=>(x+2)=4
=>not possible
hence no solution

=> (x+2)*(x-2)/(x-2)= 4
=> (x+2) = 4 [ x is not equal to 2]
=> x = 2
