The present ages of two persons differ by 35 years. 3 years later, the elder one would be 4.5 times as old as the younger one. What is the present age of the elder person?

Solution

Let the present age of elder one be x and younger one be y
So x-y = 35 ----(i)
3 year later
(x+3) =4.5(y+3)
=> x = 4.5y + 10.5

Putting x value in (i)
4.5y + 10.5 - y = 35
=>3.5y = 24.5
=> y = 7 and x = 35+7 = 42

then age of the elder person =(x+35) years.
therefore , 4.5(x+3)=x+35+3
4.5x + 13.5=x+38
3.5x=24.5
x=7
therefore age of younger person is 7 years , then age of elder person is 7+35=42
hence option (8) is the result.

Let the present ages of the elder person and the younger person be x years and x-35 years respectively.
After 3 years,
x+3 = 4.5(x-35+3)
=> x+3 = 4.5x - 144
=> 3.5x = 147
x = 42
Present Age of the elder person is 42 years

Given A-B=35
After 3 years A is 4.5 times B
i.e., (A+3)=4.5(B+3)
By solving A=4.5B+3*3.5

On substituting in eq1
we get
4.5B+3*3.5-B=35
3.5*B+3*3.5=35
=>B=7
Hence A=35+7=42

x+3=4.5(y+3);

Simplify x+3=4.5(y+3);
x+3=(9/2)(y+3);
2(x+3)=9(y+3)=>2x+6=9y+27;
2x-9y=27-6=21;
2x-9y=21; ----(2)

Solving: 2*(1)-(2)
7y=49=>y=7;
x=35+y=>x=35+7=42;
x=42;
Elder person present age will be 42.

Let the age of Elder Person be x years.
So, Age of younger Person is = (x-35) years.
After 3 years,
Age of Elder Person = (x+3) years.
Age of Younger Person = (x-35+3) years
= (x-32) years

According to Question
Age of Elder person after 3 years = 4.5 (Age of Younger Person after 3 years)
(x+3) = 4.5 (x-32)
(x+3) = (4.5x - 144)
x-4.5x = -144-3
-3.5x = -147
x = 147/3.5
x = 42 years
So, the age of Elder Person = 42 years

Age diff of two persons A and B is 35 so A-B = 35 => B=A-35

let's take the present age of elder person=X yrs.
and present age of the younger person= (X-35) yrs.
(X+3)=4.5(X-35+3)
X+3=4.5(X-32)
X= 4.5X-144-3
