A train leaves station A at 9:00 am for station B and travels at 80 kilometres per hour. At the same time another train leaves station B for station A and travels at 100 kilometres per hour. How far (in km) will the trains be apart 45 minutes before they meet?

Solution

Relative speed with which trains are approaching each other = 80 + 100 = 180 km/h.
So with a relative speed of 180 km/h, in 45 minutes they will travel (45/60)*180 = 135 km.
The trains will be 135 km apart 45 minutes before they meet.

In 45 minutes Train A travels 80*3/4=60km
Train B travels =100*3/4=75
Distance between them is =60+75=135km
My option is 1👈
Another method relative speed =80+100=180kmph
In 45minutes they travel =180*3/4=135km
Option 1👈 is right answer.

distance between two trains 45 minutes before meeting = 180*45/60= 135 kms

Let's say both trains meet at point C.
Train 1 covers 80 km in 1 hour => 60 km in 45 minutes
Train 2 covers 100 km in 1 hour => 75 km in 45 minutes.
So before 45 minutes of meeting, train 1 will be 60 km away from C and train 2 will be 75 km away from C.
So total distance between both trains at that moment = 60 + 75 = 135 km
