Dear Admin:
For today's puzzle, its no where mentioned that only positive integers are to be considered.
Refer following page for definition of integers:
http://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/vol5/intro_integers.html
For x + y + z = 5.
Answer is infinite. Examples are:
x=1,y=-2, z=6 and x+y+z=5
x=1,y=-1,z=5 and x+y+z=5
x=1,y=-3, z=7 and x+y+z=5
x=1,y=-4,z=8 and x+y+z=5
x=2,y=-2, z=5 and x+y+z=5
x=3,y=-3,z=5 and x+y+z=5
x=0,y=1, z=4 and x+y+z=5
x=0,y=2,z=3 and x+y+z=5
x=4,y=-4, z=5 and x+y+z=5
x=6,y=-8,z=3 and x+y+z=5
x=6,y=-9, z=8 and x+y+z=5
x=6,y=-10,z=9 and x+y+z=5
x=6,y=-11, z=10 and x+y+z=5
x=6,y=-12,z=11 and x+y+z=5
x=6,y=-13, z=12 and x+y+z=5
x=1,y=-14,z=13 and x+y+z=5
x=1,y=-15, z=14 and x+y+z=5
x=1,y=-16,z=15 and x+y+z=5

Let me know if you want more such examples.

Hi Admin,

Regarding puzzle for 25th Jan 2012:

Integers means both positive and negative numbers with 0. In the question nowhere mentioned its positive numbers alone. So 10)none of these is correct option. Please check.

In today's puzzle

x + y + z = 5,
x is not equal to y, y is not equal to z and z is not equal to x,
all x, y and z are integers. Possible number of outcomes are

It is only mentioned that x,y,z are integers.

It is not stated that x,y,z are positive integere.

I have solved the qn assuming that both positive and negative integers are permitted.

I have solved according to that.

If there is any typing mistake, please clarify now so that I can correct my answer according to that.

@ Mr. Vignesh,

If you would have clearly mentioned finite fraction value and infinite fraction value, no body will have any doubt .
But you have stated that
"Other than 1/4, all are fraction values."

no body will accept that easily as 1/4 is also a fraction.

There is no need to make it prestige issue and it better to accept that mistake gracefully.

To Mr.Bankim,

1/4 = 0.25 (finite fraction value)
1/3 = 0.333333333333333333333333... (infinite f.v)
1/6 = 0.166666666666666666666667... (infinite f.v)
1/18= 0.05555555555555555555556.... (infinite f.v)

In the above cases, only 1/4 have rounded fraction value.
Other than 1/4, all are infinite fraction values.(Not exact values)
By, the above basis only i justify that 1/4 is ODD one.. I hope now Mr.Bankim n all get my point????????

In case of puzzle

There is a 4 storied building. In every floor 4 sets are available so total 16 room sets are available. I have to knock 3 out of these 16 for finding the room of my friend. What will be the probability to get the friends room?

I think probability should be
1/16 +1/15 +1/14 which is none of the given options.

as prob of getting right room in first knock = 1/16
prob of getting right room in 2nd knock = 1/15
prob of getting right room in 3rd knock = 1/14

Pls correct me if I am wrong.

@ Mr. Vignesh,

Mr. Brown said, We all r wearing Ties of color which do not match with our name. One person says Yes u r absolutely right. who was in green tie.

So it is clear that Mr. Brown is not wearing Green tie.

So Mr. Brown is wearing Yellow tie only.

If you are giving two options for each answer, that is not the puzzle for the level of m4maths.
Any child can give these options without any other statement when he knows that they wearing Ties of color which do not match with their names.

Hi Mr.Sukham,
Don't know why you didn't accept my answer in the puzzle (#M40007630).
In that puzzle, they wearing Ties of color which do not match with their names. That means, each having two possibilities to wear different colour tie which not suits their name.. So only i said Mr.Brown wears Yellow (or Green) tie
Mr.Green wears Brown (or yellow) tie
Mr.Yellow wears Green (or brown) tie.

I think that i may correct.
Now You clear Mr.Sukham?????!!!!!!

@ Admin,

Pls check this one

a)1/4
Other than 1/4, all are fraction values.
This answer given by VIGNESH is correct.

1/3
In other cases, denominator is even.
This answer is given by PARGAT PAL SINGH and is also correct
1/3 since the denominator is a prime number.
This answer is given by CHETAN ANAND and is also a good justification

You have accepted this one as correct
a)1/4
Other than 1/4, all are fraction values.
This answer given by VIGNESH is correct.

In this question, all terms including 1/4 are fractions.

How this justification can make it (1/4) odd.

Pleeeeeeeeeeease check.

A man travels from A to B at a speed of x Kmph.he than rests at B for x hours.He then travels from B to C at a speed of 2x Kmph and rests at C for 2x hours.He moves further to D at a speed twice as that between B&C.He thus reaches D in 16 hours.if distances A-b,B-c and C-D are equal to 12 Km, then time for which he rested at B could be :
3 hours

As per given conditions
12/x + x + 12/2x + 2x + 12/4x = 16

solving it, we get
x= 3 hrs

Dear Admin,

question is
x + y^2 = 17
17 > y + x^2 > 14

How any value of x and y satisfy this condition

17 > y + x^2 > 14

I think there is no justification for this ambiguity .
