Dear admin and friends,

The answer given for yesterday puzzle about 'Final match' is not correct.

It is already given that

There winning order is A>B>C>D>E>F>G>H.

In that case EFGH are in lower rank in both the pools in any possible arrangement.

Only ABCD can reach in semi final with all possible combinations .

As it is given that C has not reached in final,
Possible combinations for final are
AB
AD
BD.

Out of these three combinations, we ae interested in one combination i.e. AB.

Hence probability of final between A and b is 1/3.

I think administrator has forgotten the given condition

There winning order is A>B>C>D>E>F>G>H.

Please check and give your comments please.

@ Sunil,

The probability that a person A who is now 25 years old will not live for another 30 years is 1 - 2/5 = 3/5
The probability that the person B who is now 45 years old will not live for another 30 year is
1 - 7/16 = 9/16
The probability that none of these persons will be alive 30 years = (3/5)*(9/16) = 27/80
The probability that at least one of these persons will be alive 30 years = 1 - 27/80 = 53/80

@ Pooja,

If you mean that watch is showing correct time at 8 AM,
and
you want correct time when watch shows 8 PM, then
after x correct hrs, displayed time is x-x/120 hrs

hence
x-x/120 =12
119x = 12*120
x= 12*120/119 = 12.1008 hrs or 12 hrs 6 mins approx

so correct time is 8:06 PM approx

For the question of 21/2/2012, marks will be provided to those users too, who took option 9.
But the participants who opted option 2 are also correct. You should not comment on the answers of these participants in this manner.
You comment
It is not fair fair on your part to change language of qn on next day .
But we rectified the question in the same day at approx 5 PM., when we saw your comment on discussion board.
To those participants who changed their option after seeing the rectified question, one marks will not be deducted.

@ yadeesh,

check solution given by Aman

Sum of x terms = (x/2)*(2*30 +(x-1)*1)
when x=129,
sum = 129*188/2 =129*94=12126
for x=130
sum = 65*189=12285

so min value of x should be 130 so that
30+31+32+33+................ upto x numbers > 12250

so answer is 130.

Dear Admin
Refer the solved puzzle(#M40000070)

The answer has given as 16 but I found it as 15
Because, there would be four cuts required to get maximum No of pieces of cake. We do not get the maximum pieces when the cutting would be parallel.Therefore, axial cutting is required.
For this the following formula has been used:

For N(max)=(n^3+5n+6)/6

The mistake in qn was informed to administrator in time but there was no response from admin.

so qn was answered according to given statements.

How min k=5.5 can satisfy given conditions ?

as k=1 also satisfies all conditions when A= 9.

so
none of these should be correct for yesterday puzzle.

For the puzzle dated 09-Feb-2012 (title: minimum), the question is

k+x = 10,
x+y+z >= 8
if y >= 3.5 and 0 <= z<= 4.2
all the 4 are positive real numbers
then minimum value of k will be

1) 4.8
2) 5.3
3) 5.5
4) 6.7
5) 7.7
6) 9.7
7) 8.8
8) 3.5
9) 4.2
10) none of these

The answer is given as option 3.

Let k = 0.5, x = 9.5, y = 3.5, z = 0
k + x = 10
x + y + z = 13 >= 8
This assignment does not violate any of the given conditions... The value of k is smaller than the solution given in option 3. The answer should be option 10, none of these!!!

In fact, if the "positive real numbers" include 0, then k = 0 is the minimum possible value of k.

Even the reason given by m4maths is invalid.
according to the given conditions y + z + 2 >= k
so, 3.5 + 0 + 2 >= k
or 5.5 >= k
since k is positive, 5.5 >= k >= 0
minimum value is 0 and maximum value is 5.5

Admin, please look into it...

It is only fair, that the question be not judged, as there are people who did the question, guessing the "greater than or equal to" to be a "less than or equal to", and there are people who did it the way it was...

A man driving a car managed to cover a lap with an average speed of 300mph. He managed to cover first 2/5th of the lap with an average speed of 600mph and the second 2/5th of the lap with a speed of 400mph. Then, what is the average speed required to cover 1/5th of the lap.

If lap length is 6000 miles, he took total 20 hrs.
For first 2400 miles (2/5 lap), he took 4 hrs
For next 2400 miles (2/5 lap), he took 6hrs

For balance 100 miles (1/5 part) , he took 10 hrs.

so speed in last 1/5 part = 1200/10 = 120 mph

@ Aruna,
I think there is so much confusion due to typing mistake on my part.

what is the sum of all the numbers less than 100 that can be written as the sum of 9 consecutive positive integers?

such numbers are
45,54,63,72,81.90,99
sum = 45+54+63+72+81+90+99
= 9(5+6+7+8+9+10+11)=9*56 = 494

it should be
9*56 = 504

so answer will be 504.

ABC is three digit number.The sum of its digits is 9.If each BA and BC are two digit numbers such that BA=BC-3.How many values C can take?

hence A=C-3
A can not be zero.
A can have values from 1 to 6 so that C have values from 4-9.
6 combinations for AC are possible.
B can have any of 10 values from 0-9.

so C can take 6 values.

@Aruna : As everyone is pointing out answer is 504
Reason:
There are 7 Set of such number are:
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 = Sum is 45
2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 = Sum is 54
3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 = Sum is 63
4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 = Sum is 72
5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13 = Sum is 81
6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14 = Sum is 90
7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15 = Sum is 99

Hi Seenuvasn your solution to your problem here

Problem:
The probability that a person A who is now 25 years old, lives for another 30 years is 2/5; and the probability that the person B who is now 45 years old lives for another 30 year is 7/16. Find the probability that at least one of these persons will be alive 30 years.

Solution:
The probability that a person A who is now 25 years old will not live for another 30 years is 1 - 2/5 = 3/5
The probability that the person B who is now 45 years old will not live for another 30 year is
1 - 7/16 = 9/16
The probability that none of these persons will be alive 30 years = (3/5)*(9/16) = 27/80
The probability that at least one of these persons will be alive 30 years = 1 - 27/80 = 53/80

3. The probability that a person A who is now 25 years old, lives for another 30 years is 2/5; and the probability that the person B who is now 45 years old lives for another 30 year is 7/16. Find the probability that at least one of these persons will be alive 30 years.

In this case,
probability that a person A who is now 25 years old, does not live for another 30 years is 1-2/5= 3/5

Prob that the person B who is now 45 years old does not live for another 30 year is 1- 7/16 = 9/16.
probability that no person lives for another 30 years is 3/5 * 9/16 = 27/80
probability that at least person lives for another 30 years is 1- 27/80 = 53/80

Dear Administrator,

Thanks a lot for 'quick' response to the doubt on puzzle dtd 25/1/12.

quote
In today's puzzle

x + y + z = 5,
x is not equal to y, y is not equal to z and z is not equal to x,
all x, y and z are integers. Possible number of outcomes are

It is only mentioned that x,y,z are integers.

It is not stated that x,y,z are positive integere.

I have solved the qn assuming that both positive and negative integers are permitted.

I have solved according to that.

If there is any typing mistake, please clarify now so that I can correct my answer according to that.

Waiting for early response from administrator

Dear Admin:
In yeasterday's (25 Jan 2012) puzzle, no where it was mentioned that only positive integers are to be considered. One can take even negative integers as values for x, y and z. So this it can have infiite solutions.

I guess we need a new a major change here before this useful site starts loosing users. Reason being:
- The quality/clarity of questions has gone down drastically in last few months.
- The response from Admin is too slow. It takes ages to get a response from Admin. Ideally it is expected that we get a response within 1-2 hours, but the response comes after 2-3 days or after 16-18 hours.

Have been with this site for more than 2.5 years but now I feel sad :(.

Sulekha has already pointed out this confusion but administrator has not take pain to clarify that .

So there is confusion in the qn and accepted answer.

Administrator should regularly check and make it clear to maintain dignity of site.
