Dear Administrator,

There are two answers accepted as best solutions for yesterday's question.

Please confirm which one is correct ...................................
one from West Bengal group
.....................................
3 boys and 4 girls in a row can be arranged in a row in 7! or 5040 ways. Now let G1 and G2 be 1 single entity. Then 7-1 or 6 people can be arranged in 6!*2= 1440 ways. Similarly, if we take B1 and B2 as 1 single entity then they can also be arranged in ^!*2= 1440 ways. Again, if we take the two girls G1 and G2 as a single entity and the two boys B1 and B2 as another single entity then the 5 persons can be arranged in 5!= 120 ways. Therefore, no. of methods to place 3 boys and 4 girls in a row in such a way that neither two girls G1, G2 nor two boys B1, B2 are taken together are= 5040-1440-1440+120= 2280...... Option 9)
........................................

OR
...............................................................
one given by you ................................................
There are three other members besides B1, B2, G1 and G2.
Methods to place these three members = 3.2.1
After then methods to place two boys between them = 4.3
Then methods to place two girls between them = 6.5
Total methods = 3.2.1.4.3.6.5 = 2160

But CT was approaching the deadline for securing above 95 marks ( Sorry CT , This is ur badluck) for which m4maths was supposed to give a prize. But I was not a contender for the prize.

So I should get the marks as others have got with same logic and same answer.

Again statement of question dated 8.7.10 is confusing.

100000 rupees are deposited in BOB at a rate of 7 % interest per annum added half yearly. Total output will be?

It is not clear after how much time the final output is required .
Also whether 100000 rupees are added half yearly or interest is added half yearly.

I have solved the question assuming that amount is deposited once and interest is added half yearly and total amount is calculated after one year.

In today's question regarding density, there is some doubt.

If same water or water from same source is filled in two buckets of different volumes and density of water is asked, question seems simple. If you want to ask about overall density of bucket filled with water and air, then weight of bucket in both cases and density of air is also required.

Here it is not mentioned that what is the initial volume of solution in which 5 litres of water is added.

I have solved the question assuming that 5 litres of normal water is added to 1 litre of solution having Strength of salt as 60 gm/litre.

If 5 litres of normal water is added to 5 litre of solution having Strength of salt as 60 gm/litre, then answer will be different.

Please clarify if possible.

If the question would have been about 9 lines of equal length, then definitely the answer of 5 triangles would have been correct. But for 9 sticks of equal size, 7 triangles were possible.

Dear Sir,
Thanks a lot for reconsidering the puzzle of 10.3.2010. I have never stated that question is of 5th standard. I have taken the question in right spirit considering the members of this site . I have only stated that if the question is asked in junior class, that answer of 5 would also be acceptable. But I wish that this site should emerge stronger and give due consideration to all possibilities within given conditions of question.

Please excuse me if any of my statement has hurt feelings of anyone . Once again thanks a lot for giving due regards to observation of members.

well explained, Dpin. The administrator has solved this puzzle with limited vision and simple approach in single plane only. In single plane maximum 5 triangles can be made by any 5th standard student as pointed out by Shikha. In the arrangement suggested by Dipin, 7 triangles can be made as desired in question for max no of triangles by arranging 9 equal sticks.

There is no constraint for arrangement of sticks in one plane only. I appreciate the approach of Shikha and Dipin. I hope that administrator will definitely consider the request of Shikha and think again with open mind to accept this solution gracefully.

Dear Siddhartha,

If u can visualise , then I shall try to explain here.

Make an equilateral triangle with 3 sticks in centre.... Now with 3 sticks on each side , make two triangular pyramids on each side of this base.

Each pyramid will have 3 triangles.

so total 3+3+1 ( common ) =7 triangles

Surprised to note that accepted answer for the qn of 10.3.10 ..... There are nine sticks of equal size. Maximum number of triangles formed by using these sticks in one attempt are....5...........

If this question is asked in a class of 5th standard , then this answer would have been acceptable and consolation prize/marks can be given to the student for this answer.

But when this question is asked at a site called www.m4maths.com with participating members from Elite organisations and ccolleges/schools , then answer is not correct.
..................
One can make maximum 7 triangles if thjese 9 sticks are properly used.
...........................
7 triangles can be achieved by making two triangular pyramids with common base.

Then each pyramid will have 3 triangles and one common base triangle making total 7 triangles.
........................
Please check it with open mind.
........................
You may not give marks to me for this qn but this ans of max 5 triangles is not correct.

Dear Sir,

Please read the qn and options

Six men do a piece of work in 10 days with an effort of 6 hours per day. How many extra men are required for doing the work of double strength in 4 days with an effort of 5 hours per day

1) 3
2) 2
3) 1
4) 4
5) 5
6) 6
7) 7
8) 8
9) 9
10) 0

Your calculation for men reqd = (6*10*6*1)/(4*5*2) -6 = 9-6=3 persons, which is in options .... is not correct.

In this calculation you have not considered the work of double strength but men of double strength.
Normal work requires 6*10*6 = 360 man hours.
work of double strength will require 720 man hours.................
Total men required for doing the work of double strength( of 720 man hours ) in 4 days with an effort of 5 hours per day = 720/(4*5) = 36 men

Additional men reqd will be 36-6 =30 men.

Hope it is clear now.

Please excuse me for continuing discussion.

Your answer is only valid if all men now employed are of double strength and work is normal which only for 360 man hours.

According to 27.1.2010 question,

Six men do a piece of work in 10 days with an effort of 6 hours per day. How many extra men are required
for doing the work of double strength in 4 days with an effort of 5 hours per day.

Answer given is option 1...3 persons.

Means total 9 persons are required to do the work of double strength ( as clarified by Administrator).

As per clarificatin , the answer should be

(6*10*6*2)/(4*5*2) -6 = 18-6=12 persons
which is not in options.

I think there must be additional men of double strength in addition to 6 men of normal strength ( as pointed out by Dipin)

Please check again.

Question of 5.2.2010 is "The difference of cube and square of a real number is equal to the difference of its square and itself. Total number of such real numbers are."
if it would be "The modulus of difference of cube and square of a real number is equal to the modulus of difference of its square and itself. Total number of such real numbers are" then yours logic would be valid

Pls check the statement of question.

The difference of cube and square of a real number is equal to the difference of its square and itself.
Total number of such real numbers are ....

Sol given is 2.
based on explanation

x^3 - x^2 = x^2 - x
which is correct.

But please note according to given statement, there is one more equation that satisfies given condition which is

x^3 - x^2 = x - x^2

Here the question is about difference.

this equation gives one more value of x i.e. -1.

so answer should be 3... option 4.

I think ans for qn of 27.1.10 should be 6 additional persons
( option6).

After waiting for the response of admin for whole day, I changed my ans from option 1 to option 6 considering the best possible interpretation of statement of question.

As per question of 27.1.10, the initial persons are of normal strength.

Only additional persons are of double strength .

Then additional persons ( of double strength ) required will be 9-6/2= 9-3=6 .

Six men do a piece of work in 10 days with an effort of 6 hours per day. How many extra men are required for doing the work of double strength in 4 days with an effort of 5 hours per day ?

Is the total work of double strength as compared to first case ?

or

The additional men are of double strength than men in first case ?

or

All men for new work will be of double strength than men in first case ?
