It feels pity that so many people got right answer to 09-Dec-2009 puzzle and yet, no one had a comment to match with the admin's logic. Also, I agree with Mr. Daniel. The puzzles posted must be of solving type in Mathematics and logic, and not find odd one out and other find code type. It feels very boring when the volume of such coding puzzles increase. Once in a fortnight, it is ok to have some codes or so. But other days, there must be well-solvable logically challenging maths problems.

for the puzzle yesterday i.e. 7/12/2009 answer shown by ADMIN is FOOT i.e. option 3.... However, you awarded points to some other people who gave answer as FUN i.e. Option 10.

How can you award points like that...? As there can be only one answer. that is what ever admin gives that will be final...

Please clarify this....

That last puzzle wasn't exactly reasonable... sure, "FOOT" was the only word with a double letter, but you could just as well say that "FIGURE" was the only one with three vowels (or with six letters), and "FUN" was the only one where the letters added up to a prime (which seems *much* more reasonable than the other option.) You could easily come up with just-as-reasonable justifications for several other options as well.

I certainly don't think I should *lose* points for not guessing the particular criteria you wanted when there were several other that were no more or less reasonable.

Again, if there were more problems that actually stated a math problem and fewer that asked you to find a pattern in a series of words, this wouldn't be such a huge issue.

The new looks of the site is amazing. Dear admin, will you please clear my doubts? It has been displayed that be one among top 5 to win prizes. By that, did you mean that top 5 people of a week will get the respective prizes every week? Or is the minimum cut-off of 80 points still valid? I would also like to point out that m4maths is printed out wrongly as 'm4amths' in the today's puzzle page, just above today's puzzle, where the italic writing has been employed. Once again, the new looks are awesome.

Dear Admin

todays question was "Three non parallel tangents are drawn in a circle. What is the probability that it would be an incircle."

As I understand the meaning, "We are given with a circle and then we are trying to draw 3 tangents which are not parallel to each other. Now we have to calculate whether the given circle will be an incircle or not."

For a case of 3 non parallel tangents, it will always be a circle.

The answer could have been 1/4 if the question was given something like "a circle is given and three Random tangents are drawn.. whats the probability that it is an incircle?"

Kindly check my logic

Dear admin, since I have started to like the concept of the website, I would like to point out a few things that do not look so good.

The introduction says: "Warning: Please think before Joining (girls)."

What is the purpose of mentioning (girls) in this statement? Is it any subtle kind of pun that I don't understand or even find tasteful?

And secondly, why is the linguistic level so bad on this website? There are too many errors throughout the webpages. It would certainly help to correct them.

Dear admin, thank you for considering my suggestion. I would like to make into your notice a mistake. In the "maths quotes" page, one quote has been cited twice, each time, it appears to be said by different people. Can you clarify that? It is just, Math is always perfect and I would like our site to be too. The quote is "Mathematics is the supreme judge; from its decisions there is no appeal.", cited by "John Louis von Neumann" and "Tobias Dantzig". Please clarify or rectify this. By, the way the quotes page is superb too! Keep the good work up. We all are with you.

Unbelievable !

How the given logic can be accepted ?
The logic should satisfy all the given examples.

As only composite and non composite number satisfies all examples and according to that , option 1 should be correct,

It should be considered as only acceptable answer.

Dear Admin,

As has been mentioned by many people, the given answer for yesterday's puzzle isn't correct. To me my logic sounded correct in which code is formed by (number of primes and of "digit 1")/remaining number of characters. '1' not being the prime number, has to be included in the logic as an addition to the counting of prime numbers.

Without inteding to sound fussy about it, I would like to mention that earlier as well, in my 8th October post, I have given a correct alternative solution. Like some others who get points for the correct alternative for solution, my answer should also be considered.

For previous day puzzle
CODE FOR LOYE

The logic given was based on ODD/Even position of letters in the word.

But this is not correct in case of SIJM... 2/2.
If someone can find 2 even numbers in SIJM = 19 9 10 13, then it is cruel joke on mathematics.
The mistake may be due to some typing error at some stage while deciding/posting the puzzle on site, but the logic given by the persons giving correct ans as option 3 may come forward to give suitable logic to satisfy all codes .

Otherwise admin and everyone concerned should gracefully accept option 1 as correct answer which satisfies the logic of composite and non composite numbers .

Dear Admin

For puzzle of dt 27 oct
the reason submitted was

"Positions of X, M, A & T in English alphabet are 24, 13, 1 & 20.
Two numbers are odd and two numbers are even, hence code is 2/2
Similarly positions of L, O, Y & E in English alphabet are 12, 15, 25, 5
Three numbers are odd and 1 is even, hence code is 3/1.
"

But if we apply the same logic to SIJM = 19 9 10 13 odd/even = 3/1
But in the qn it is given 2/2
Kindly check the answer given by me and explain the SIJM concept.

I think that the answer would be prime/composite = option#1

Hello sujit. your logic for 20 oct puzzle was=>

in 4216 -- 4+2+6= 12= 1+2 = 3
in all the sums just cancel the 3rd digits and add the numbers to get a single digit number

It was a good logic so we can consider it as a unique solution. and we are giving you 11 points for your Logic.

In today's puzzle<20 Oct> we can solve it by another way also

delete the third digit of every number and add the remaining digits... if the result is a 2 digit number, then again add the two digits to get a single digit...
check this out.. this is valid for the three given conditions.

I think there were 2 unique solutions and hence both the answers should be considered.

How many combinations are possible if 3 one rupee coin, 4 fifty paise coin and 2 twenty five paise coin are available. It is compulsory to select any one of the coin.

The question is not clear.
Whether various combinations of coins are required or possible combination of amount made by selecting different combination of coins??

Also it is not clear whether combination with atleast one coin of each type is required or combination of only one coin of any type is also to be counted.

In general, what if there are multiple valid ways of solving a puzzle, and each may lead to a unique answer?

e.g. yestedays's puzzle
If in a coded language 6^3 =15 4^2 =14 8^4 =16
Then 9^5 = ?
OPTIONS 16 10 19 12 14 13 15 17 18 11

There is even simpler way to get a unique answer here than what was mentioned officially.

Difference in the digits on RHS = Difference in the digits on LHS +1

This gives 16 as an answer.

This (or for that matter any other) answer can be regarded as wrong only when it is not unique.

but no negative mark;
do only that ANYone cand change his/her answer option and submit;

ok; we can restrict freq. change by negative mark if someone change freq.
i.e. if change >= 3 -1 Marks;
if change >= 5 -2 Marks; likewise
