Drum X is half full of oil and drum Y, which has twice the capacity of drum X, is 2/3 full of oil. If all of the oil in drum X is poured into drum Y. then drum Y will be filled to what fraction of its capacity ?
Read Solution (Total 6)
-
- ANS: 11/12
it is given that, Y=2X
the oil in drum X is half full and if it is poured to Y then it will fill upto one forth capacity.
So, after filling this oil to Y, then the total filled capacity of Y
= (1/4)+(2/3)
= 11/12 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(5) No(0)
- Lets say Drum x capacity is 100. Drum Y capacity will be 200.
Oil in drum x is 50
Oil in drum y is 100* 2/3 = 400/3
Fraction of oil in y after x is emptied into y is = (50 + 400/3) / 200
= 550/600
= 11/12 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(4) No(3)
- DRUM X IS HALF CAPACITY OF DRUM Y AND IS HALF FILLED..........SO 1/4 TH OF Y
WHEN POURED IN TO Y,2/3+1/4=11/12 OF Y - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(0)
- ANS: 11/12
as drum X contains oil to half its capacity, also given that drum Y has twice the capacity of X.so if oil in X is poured into Y it can fill upto 1/4 volume of Y.
So adding already contents in Y (2/3) to 1/4
=(1/4)+(2/3)
=11/12 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(0)
- assume Drum X has capacity 1...therefore oil filled upto 0.5
drum y has capacity 2....oil upto 1.33 as (2*2/3)
now is Drum X oil is poured into y...then total oil=1.33+0.5=1.83..
therefore filled fraction=1.83/2=0.915=91.5% - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- given capacity of y = 2x
total oil in x interms of y = y/4
so if oil in x is poured in y then total oil in y = 2y/3 + y/4 = 11y/12
