Maths Puzzle
Two water taps together can fill a tank in 9(3/8) hours. The tap of larger diameter takes 10 hours less than the smaller one to fill the tank separately, then how much time is required to fill the tank separately by each tap?
Read Solution (Total 2)

- Let time taken by tap with smaller diameter to fill tank = x hours
Work done in 1 hour = 1/x
time taken by tap with bigger diameter to fill tank = (x - 10) hours
Work done in 1 hour = 1/(x - 10)
1/x + 1/(x - 10) = 8/75
8x^2 - 230x + 750 = 0
4x^2 - 115x + 375 = 0
4x^2 - 100x - 15x + 375 = 0
x = 25 or x = 3.75
x = 3.75 rejected because then x - 10 < 0
So x = 25
Time taken by pipes are 25 hours and 15 hours(ans) - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(5) No(1)
let the small pipe take x hours then larger pipe take x-10 hours to fill seperately
then 1/x+/x-10 = 8/75
2x-10/x²-10x= 8/75
150x-750 =8x²80x
8x²-230x+750=0
4x²-1150X+375 =0
SOLVING X=25,15/4
BUT 15/4 IS NOT POSSIBLE (15/4-10 < 0)
X= 25 ,X-10 =15- 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(1)
