In the adjoining diagram, ABCD and EFGH are squres of side 1 unit such that they intersect in a square of diagonal length (CE) = 1/2. The total area covered by the squares is
A. Cannot be found from the information
B. 1 1/2
C. 1 7/8
D. None of these
Read Solution (Total 6)

- area of intersecting sq= 1/8
area of both square=1+1=2
total area cvrd by sqr=2-1/8= 15/8 ans c. - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(24) No(5)
- 15/8 is d ans

- if the ans is 15/8 means ans c is correct rit..?? coz we can write 15/8 as 1 7/8 rit..>??

- using pythogerous theorem......
CE = 1/2
(1/2)/2 = 1/4
so the sides r 1/4,1/4, x in d right angle triangle
(1/4)^2 + (1/4)^2 = x^2
so x = 1/ sqrt(8).
area of intersecting square = x^2 = 1/8
area of both square=1+1=2
total area cvrd by sqr=2-1/8= 15/8

- how do you know from where did 2 square intersect third one,it jus given 2 square intersect 3rd,
- 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(6) No(0)
- area of square = (side)^2 = (diagonal/√2)^2
so for big square (1)^2 = 1
there are two big squares so..1 + 1 = 2
then for the smaller intersecting square the diagonal value is only given,so
area ((1/2)/√2)^2 = 1/8
the total area covered by the squares is = 2 - (1/8) = (16-1)/8 = 15/8 - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(6) No(1)
