Age Problem
Ten years ago X was half of Y. If the ratio of their present ages is 3:4, what will be the total of their present ages?
Read Solution (Total 22)
-
- let the present age of X and Y be x,y
x:y=3:4
x-10=1/2(y-10)
on solving the equations we get
x=15,y=20
so total =35 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(12) No(0)
- X present x
Y present x
X=3,Y=4
(3x-10) = 1/2(4x-10)
2(3x-10)= (4x-10)
6x-4x=20-10 -> 2x=10 ->x=5
.
. . 3x + 4x
->3*5 +4*5
15+20=35
- 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(4) No(0)
- let present age of X is x/2
present age of Y is x
then
X Y
x/2 - 10 x-10
3 4
on cross multiplication, we get
4((x/2)-10) = 3(x-10)
2x-10 = 3x-30 => x = (-) 10
present age of Y is x = 10 + 10 = 20
present age of X is x/2 = 5 + 10 = 15
total ages of X & Y is 15+20 = 35
- 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(0)
- Present ages X , Y
Ten years ago : X-10 = (Y-10) / 2 ---- (1)
Present age ratio X:Y = 3:4 -----------(2)
Solving 1 & 2
Y = 20, X=15
Total X+ Y =35
- 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(0)
- Let the present age of X be x.
age of X ten years ago was (x-10)
age of Y ten years ago was 2(x-10) as because Y is twice as big as X
So the case before ten years is (x-10)=2(x-10)
So the case at present is (x-10)+10=2(x-10)+10 i.e x= 2x-10
hence by ratio,
3/4=x/(2x-10)
by solving, x=15.
sub in 2x-10 we get age of y as 20
x+y = 20+15=35. - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(0)
- 35 explanation : ( 3x-10)=1/2(4x-10)

- Let Current Age Of X And Y is x and Y.
So,Ten Years Ago,
X's Age=x-10.
Y's Age=y-10.
According to Question,
x-10=1/2(y-10)
On Solving this,
2x-y=10--------->1
and It is Given That
x:y=3:4
or x=3/4y---------->2
On Solving 1 and 2
x=15,y=20
x+y=35
- 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(0)
- (X-10)=(Y-10)/2 and X/Y=3/4
X=15,Y=20
TOTAL 35 YEARS - 8 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(0)
- ans 30
x=1/2y eq1
x:y is given 3:4
by subsituting the value of x in eq1
y=20
then x=10
sum of their present age 30
- 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- x=15,y=20 4x=3y and 2(x-10)=(y-10)
- 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- Total age is 14
- 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(1)
- present ages be x,y
given: x=10= 1/2(y=10)
x:y=3:4
so solving we get, x=15, y=20
so, present age is 35
- 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- let the past age of X and Y be x,2x
after 10years their ages are (x+10), (2x+10) respectively
(x+10)/(2x+10)=3/4
on solving the equations we get
x=5
present age of X is (5+10)=15years
present age of Y is (2*5)+10=20years
total=15+20=35 years - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- y=20 and x=15
- 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(1)
- answer is 35
let the present age of X be x and that of Y is y.
now x/y=3/4
x-10=(y-10)/2
solving the two equatins we get y=20 and x=15 hence x+y=35 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- let the ages of X and Y 10 years ago be X and Y
X=1/2Y
After 10 years their ages would be X+10 and Y+10 which is their present ages
now,
(X+10)/(Y+10)=3/4
Solving this we get,Y=10
and X=5
Now their present ages would be: X+10=5+10=15
and Y+10=10+10=20
Sum of their ages =15+20=35 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- let present age is 3x,4x
ten years ago
2(3x-10)=4x-10
x=5
so present age are 15 and 20
so sum=35 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- sum of ages=35
ten years ago: ages= 5 and 10 (1:2)
present ages= 15 and 20 (3:4)
sum= 15+20 = 35 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- suppose the present age of X=a+10 and Y=2a+10
therefore a+10/2a+10=3/4
on solving the equations we get X=15,Y=20
so total age+35 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- x-10=0.5(y-10)
4x=3y
3y-40=2y-20
y=20
x=15 - 7 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- ans is 35
the age of X and Y 10 yrs ago be x and 2x
then,
(x+10)/(2x+10)=3/4
4(x+10)=3(2x+10)
2x=10
x=50
therefore,sum of their present ages =(x+10)+(2x+10)
=3x+20
=3*5+20
=35 yr - 7 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- answer is 35
