Time Distance and Speed
A solar ? powered car is being test driven. The vechile is driven at 30mph under solar power and 40 mph under regular power .The trip to the nearest town takes 45 min using both solar and regular power ,wheras the return trip takes 50 min using only solar power . on the trip to the town ,find the distance driven using regular power?
Read Solution (Total 4)
-
- one way distance = 30*50/60 = 25 miles
if for x mins, regular power was used , then
x*40/60 + (45-x)*30/60= 25
x*2/3 +(45-x)/2=25
x= 25*6-45*3=15 mins
Distance driven using regular power= 15*40/60= 10 miles

- ANS: 15miles
Speed of vehicle under solar(in miles/min)= 30/60= 0.5 miles/minute.
Speed of vehicle under regular(in miles/min)= 40/60= 2/3 miles/minute.
Total dist traveled by solar = 50*0.5 = 25 miles.
let dist traveled under solar be 'd'; under regular will be (45-d).
Now , 0.5*d + (2/3)*(45-d)=25
0.5d + 30 - (2/3)d=25
(3d+180-4d)/6=25
180-d=150 => d=30. (under solar 30 miles)
dist traveled under reg. speed will be (45-d) = 45-30
=15 miles.
