Ram and Shyam are in two towns 58 kms apart. They both start at 10 a.m in the morning in their motorcycle. If they drive in the opposite direction they would pass each other in 5 hours and if they drive in the same direction one would catch up with the other in 23 hours The ratio of the speed of the faster one to the slower one is :

- 5*S1+ 5*S2 = 58 ;23*S1 - 23*S2 = 58; so S1: S2 = 19:9

- Let speed of ram=u and speed of shyam =v
(58/u)=(58-x)/v this implies that v=(58-5*u)/5....(1)
and let speed traveled by shyam in 23 hours =y
then 23*u=(23*v)+58....(2)
put the value of v from equation 1
23*u={23*(58-5u)/5}+58
i get u=7.06 and v=4.53
s0,u/v=~ 7/4

- 5x + 5y =58; 23x -23y =58; by componendo dividendo x:y=23:5
