A ship 75 km from the port springs a leak that admits 3 tonnes of water every 10 minutes. 45 tonnes of water will cause the ship to sink. However, the pumps in the ship can throw out 3 tonnes of water every hour. What should be speed at which the ship should sail if she were to reach shore safely?

- 10 min=3 tonnes water;60min=60*3/10=18tonnes.
actual water entering=18-3=15 tonnes;so ship sink in 45/15=3hrs.hence speed shld be more than or equal to 75/3=25km/hr - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(19) No(1)
- the speed of the ship should be more than 25 km/hr
in 1 hr the leak is 15 ton. so before 3 hour it should reach the port. - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(2)
- 3 tonnes per 10 min= 18 tonnes per hour
capacity of pumps=3 tone per hour
so net water coming=18-3=15 tonne
means in 3 hours it will be 45 tone to cause ship to sink hence
speed=distnce/time
=75 km/3
=25 km per hour ans
