Ram and Shyam run a race of 2000 m.First,Ram gives shyam a start of 200 m and beats him by 30 s.Next, Ram gives Shyam a start of 3 min and is beaten by 1000 meters.Find time in which Ram and Shyam can run race separatedly.

- ans:4min,5 min
let speed of ram=x
speed of shyam=y
from 1st case
1800/y=(2000/x)+30......1
from 2nd case
2000/y=(1000/x)+180.......2
let 1/x=u,1/y=v
solving 1 and 2 we get
u=3/25
v=3/20
so,x=25/3 & y=20/3
time taken by ram=2000/(25/3)=240sec
time taken by shyam=2000/(20/3)=300sec

- if ram cover 2000m then shyam cover (1800-30*v)m [v=velocity of shyam]
again if ram cover 1000m then shyam cover (2000-180*v)
therefore 2000/1000=(1800-30*v)/(2000-180*v)
after solving v=6.66m/sec=400m/min
i.e shyam take 5min to complete the race similarly ram take 4min to complete - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(7) No(3)
- both take 5 minutes.
becoz ram & shyam speed is 20/3 m/sec. - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(2)
- ram takes 4 min and shyam takes 5 min
- 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(1)
- ram take 240 seconds and shyam takes 300 seconds
let time taken by ram to complete the race be x sec and time taken by shyam be y sec
here we have to find x and y
it means speed of ram is 2000/x and speed of shyam is 2000/y
in first case shyam covers 200m that is he covers 1/10 of the race .so remaining race that is left is 9/10 of total race.so shyam runs the remaining race in 9/10y
also ram takes 30 sec less to complete the race
so 9/10y = x+30 eq 1
in the second case as shyam has run for 180 seconds so he has covered a distance of (2000/y)*180 metres
so remaining distance = 2000 - 2000*180/y
let the remaining distance be d1
time taken by shyam to complete this distance is = d1/(2000/y) = y*d1/2000
in this time ram can only run 1000 m
so y*d1/2000=1000/(speed of ram)
y*(2000-2000*180/y)/2000 = 1000/(x/2000)
on solving we get
2y - x = 360 eq2
from 1 and 2 we get x = 240 and y = 300 seconds
