Alvin, Ben, and Clinton run a race, with Alvin finishing 48 meters ahead of Ben,and 72 meters ahead of Clinton while runner Ben finishes 32 meters ahead of runner Clinton. Each runner travels the entire distance at constant speed. What is the length of the race?
a. 480
b. 96
c. 192
d. None of these
Read Solution (Total 7)

- answer is 192...
let whole distance is 'd' and speed of Alvin, Ben, and Clinton is A,B,C,,,
then
A*t=d .... 1
B*t=(d-48).....2
C*t=(d-72).....3
so
from eqt 1,2 & 3
A:B:C::d:(d-48):(d-72).....4
now second condition is..
B:C::d:(d-32)....5
fro eqtn 4 and 5..
(d-48)/(d-72)=d/(d-32)...
on solving(or by option) d= 192...

- please tell me that how to find out the sum of the following
1!+2!+3!+4!+5!.......n! - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(14) No(7)
- let the speeds of alvin,ben,clinton be A,B,C resp. and d be the length of race.
let in time t alvin finishes the race
A*t=d
B*t=d-48....(1)
C*t=d-72....(2)
So,B:C=(d-48):(d-72).....(3)
Now Ben covers 48mt more to complete the race.In the same time Clinton covers 40mt (as it is given that he is beaten by 32mt by ben)
So,B:C=48:40....(4)(speed proportional to distance covered if time is same)
comparing equation (3) and (4)...we get
d=192mt - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(9) No(0)
- its (n+1)!-1

- Thus the total distance covered is 192 m.
