An escalator is moving downwards. X takes 40 steps to reach bottom from top and Y takes 60 steps to reach top from bottom. The speeds of X and Y are equal. What is number of steps on the escalator from bottom to the top?
Read Solution (Total 7)
-
- X is moving with the escalator and Y is moving against the escalator and both having same speed.
assume escalator move from bottom to the top s steps total,so
X takes 40+s and Y takes 60-s
so, 40+s=60-s
2s=20=> s=10
number of steps on the escalator from bottom to the top is 50(ans)

- ans is 50.

- Let's our speed is 1step/min (convert steps into time) and total steps are s,
and escalqtor's speed is x. so for moving down s/1+x=40 and for up s/1-x = 60
s x=1/5 ,, putting it in any eq. we got s=48 ... so i think 48 is the ans. - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(0)
- i think its dummy question.
because we dont know the time.
so we cant equate these equation. - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(6)
- 10?? nt sure about it...explain

- 40 steps...As the steps from bottom to top is 40...

- suppose escalator has s no. of steps.
as it is moving downward...therefore as per concept of relativity
s-40=60-s ( since X is moving in same direction and Y in opposite to the escalator)
s=10
therefore 60-10= 50 no. of steps are there on escalator. - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(1)
