- @debaranjan : but if we solve it through equation there are 3 variables and 2 equations. So both statements are not sufficient to find the answer. However if we we adopt hit and trial approach as of yours than we can find the answer. So what will be its answer as far as problem of Data Sufficiency is concerned ??

- In data sufficiency you cannot assume the data other then what is provided. Solving it through equation there are 3 variables and 2 equations. So, cannot be answered through both the statements.

- shortest length=5.25
All three Lengths are 6.25,5.75,5.25
6.25+5.75=12
5.75+5.25=11

- as there are three variable so we required 3 equation
by tricking there may be many soln as 6.4 5.6 5.4 and 6.25 5.75 5.25
so both statement are in sufficient to give answer - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(1)
- let a be largest, c be smallest, x be total length
a+b+c=x....(i)
a+b=12...(ii)
b+c=11...(iii)
from eq.(i) a+b=x-c....(iv) and b+c=x-a(v) and replace a+b and b+c of eq. (i),(iii) by eq. (iv)& (v)
on solvng this x-c=12 and x-a=11 we get a-c=1
so finally we have a+b=12,b+c=11,a-c=1, a+b+c=x
Now if x=18 then( a=7,b=5,c=6) but it is not fixed it vary according to x value
if x=18.5 then (a=7.5,b=4.5,c=6.5)

- I also think the same that it cannot be answered through both the statements i.e. answer is (b)

- yes we can't assume any value.....and this question can't be solved using any of these equations....

- x+y=12
y+z=11
so x-z=1
so (if x=6 then z will be 5)just example
v can take x=6,y=6,z=5 all will satisfy
but it is mentioned that all x,y,z are diff
so our aim should be like this (take x,y,z like this diffrence between them will little
if x=6.4,y will be 5.6,
and z=x-1==> 5.4
which will satisfied the condition
