Time Distance and Speed
A person meets a train at a railway station coming daily at a particular time. One day he is late by 30 minutes, and he meets the train 5 kms before the station. If his speed is 12 kmph, what is the speed of the train?

- Ans: 60 kph
Suppose Person meets the train everyday at 3 PM at Station A.
His speed is 12kph.
So normally he reaches 5 km before the meeting point (pt B) at (5/12 hr = 25 min before) 2:35PM.
But if he is late by 30 min, then he will reach that point (pt B) by 3:05 PM.
Train is traveling at its normal speed so it covers the distance of 5 Km in 5 min starting from Station A and reaches the meeting point (pt B) at 3:05 PM.
So speed of the train is 5KM/5min = 60 kph.

- man late by 30 mins
So distance between man and train = 12/2=6km
but man meets train 5km before station.
so 1km of man=5km of train
12km of man= 60km of train
ans-60km

- The person is 30min late....his speed is 12kmph ..distance from station should be 6kms ( 12kmph * 30 min)....but its 5km in questn...how this is possible?????

- let train speed = t kmph
and person covers distance in 1/2 an hour = 12/2=6 km
so before 1/2 an hour, he was 6 km before station.
they meet 5km before sation.
so the distance btwn the man and the train is 6-5=1 km
so the person goes 1 km in 1/12 hrs.
now their relative speed, t-12 kmph
now applying the formula, distance/speed=time, we can equate
1(distance)/t-12(relative speed) = 1/12(time)
t=24kmph
so trains speed = 24kmph

- is it 30???
- 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(5)
- distance /(train -12)-distance/(train-12)=1/2
now solving this we get speed of train = 22km/hr
