There are certain diamonds in a shop.
1 thief stole half of diamonds and 2 more.
2 thief stole half of remaining and 2 more
3. same as above
4 same as above.
5 came nothing was left for that.
how many diamonds was there?
Read Solution (Total 12)
-
- answer=60
let the total diamonds x.
first person took x/2 and extra 2,
so the remaining are (x/2)-2= let it be y,
similarly , the second person took y/2 + 2, so remaining are y/2 -2.........
after 4 similar attempts,the shop is left with 0 diamonds,
so the final expression will be
1/2*(1/2*(1/2*(x/2 -2)-2)-2)-2 =0
from this x =60
so, first person took 60/2 +2 =32
2nd person took 28/2 +2 = 16
3rd person took 12/2 +2 =8
4th person took 4/2 +2 =4
so........we are left with 0 diamonds in the shop.. i think this the correct answer. - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(34) No(1)
- answer=60
solution:
let the total diamonds be x.
diamonds stole by 1st thief =x/2+2=(x+4)/2;
n by 2nd one=(x+4)/4;
by 3rd one=(x+4)/8;
by 4th one=(x+4)/16;
Hence x-[(x+4/2)+(x+4/4)+(x+4/8)+(x+4/16)]=0;
On solving, x=60

- last person=0
fourth person=4 diamonds
third person=12 diamonds
second person=28 diamonds
first person=60 diamonds

- in such type of question we solve it in a backward order
the last person was left with 0 diamonds so the 4th thief had divided the diamonds such that only 2 diamonds were left only then he will take 2 more diamonds.
that means - 2*2 =4
Now for the 4th thief- 4 diamonds were there
So previously there were
4+2=6 diamonds after dividing it by half.
So, the 3rd thief had 6*2=12 diamonds
Similarly, 2nd thief saw (12+2) * 2 = 28 diamonds
And 1st thief saw (28+2) * 2 =60 diamonds (ANS) - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(0)

- let us consider,there was x diamonds
after 1st one: x-(x/2-2)
2nd:(x-x/2-2)-(x/4-2)
3rd:((x-x/2-2)-(x/4-2))-(x/8-2))
4th: ((x-x/2-2)-(x/4-2))-(x/8-2))-(x/16-2)
finally there is no diamonds
so (16x-8x-4x-x)/16=8
therefore x=128
ans:128 - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(7)
- ans:-is 120
each person gets half of diamonds plus 2 more in each round
{[(x/2)+2]+[(x/4)+2]+[(x/8)+2]+[(x/16)+2]}=x
x=128
but i have not subtracted each time 2 more diamonds in half of reaming diamonds so 4*2=8
128-8=120
Total diamonds are 120
