A merchant can place 8 large boxes or 10 small boxes into a carton for shipping. In one shipment, he sent a total of 96 boxes. If there are more large boxes than small boxes, how many cartons did he ship?
Read Solution (Total 3)

- ans: 11 cartons
l be no. of large boxes and s be no. of small boxes.
8*l+10*s=96 (Given)
=>4l+5s=48
=>let values of s as (1,2,..) and test for the remainder to be divisible by 4 and also l>s (given)
=>only possible set is (l,s)==(7,4)
=>Hence, total cartons 7+4=11 - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- Half of 96 boxes = 48 boxes
But given more large boxes than small ones
so it can be 56,64,72... but small ones are multiples of 10 so possible boxes are 56,96
but if we take 96, count of small boxes will be zero so 56+40 i,e., 8*7+4*10=7+4=11 boxes - 7 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- if the count of small box is zero, then 12*8=96 i,e.,he can ship 12 cartons
