Time Distance and Speed
There are two swimmers at the two end of a swimming pool..Then first meet at a distance of 50 km from the east and there second meeting will be at a distance of 20 km from the west end. What is the length of the Pool.

- if they started swimming same time
let total distance=D,First swimmer speed which starts from west=W &second=E;
1-from first condition-
time taken by both swimmers same-> (D-50)/W =50/E (time=distance/time)
W/E=50/(D-50)..........(1)
2-Second condition--
Distance covered by first=(2D-20)
"" "" "" "" second=(D+20)
by above formula W/E=(D+20)/(2D-20) ........(2)
after solving above two equations D=130 ans-130 - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(37) No(3)

- which is the correct answer 130 or 70.
why is this is not correct?
50+20=70
50 frm east and 20 from west

can any 1 explain me - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(1)
- Short trick::
large distance*3-short distance
so;
50*3-20=130 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(0)
- suppose E and W are speed of swimmers from East and West respectively, and Length of pool is S.
1st they meet at 50 m from East at time
t1 = 50/E=(S-50)/W => W/E=(S-50)/50 ------- eq 1.
2nd time they meet at 20m from West
t2=20/W=(S-20)/E => W/E=20/(S-20) --------- eq 2.
from Eq 1 and eq 2. s=70; - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(0)
- length of the pool is 50 km
because they meet 50 km from the east.
but the 20 km from the west is there second meeting not the distance covered by both swimmer. and it is also not mentioned that the both start swimming only written that the there are two swimmer at the two end of a swimming pool.
so 50 km will be the answer. - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(5)
- guys 70 cant possible ans will be 130
just think if 70 will be ans then east swimmer travell 50 and west swimmer travell 50
it means east swimmer is fast because he travell more than wester
so if he meets 2nd time 20 m from west it means east swimmer travell another 40 m but and wester travell 50+50 =100 meter how it can be possible wester is 2/5 times slower.i hope u understand nd think about 130 u ill understand 130 fits - 7 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- Two swimmers start swimming in a swimming pool from opposite ends. They met first at a distance of 50m50m from east and return back. They met again for a second time at 20m20m from west. Find the length of pool. Assume their speeds are constant.

- THOSE WHO ARE GETTING ANS AS 70 HAS TAKEN THE RETURN OF THE SWIMMERS FROM THE MEETING POINTS WHILE THOSE WHO ARE GETTING 13O HAS TAKEN THE RETURN POINTS AS END POINTS SAY EAST AND WEST POINTS,SO IT SHOULD BE CLEAR IN QUESTION THAT WHAT IS THE RETURN POIN,MEETING POINT OR END POINTS.
