Maths Puzzle
From a book, a number of consecutive pages are missing. The sum of the page numbers of these pages is 9808.
Which pages are missing?
Read Solution (Total 3)
-
- Let the number of missing pages be n and the first missing page number is p+1.
Then the pages p+1 up to and including p+n are missing,
sum of numbers on missing pages =
n(((p+1)+(p+n))/2)=9808
n*(2*p+n+1)= 32*613
One of the two terms n and 2*p+n+1 must be odd, and the other one must be even. Also the term n must be smaller than the term 2*p+n+1.
so there are only two possible cases:
n=1 and (2*p+n+1)=32*613, so n=1 and p=9807, so only page 9807+1 = 9808 is missing
which is not possible as at least 2 pages are counted when a leaf is missing.
other chance is
n=32 and 2*p+n+1=613, so n=32 and p=290, so the pages 291 up to and including 322 are missing.
hence the pages 291 up to 322 (including 322) are missing. - 13 years agoHelpfull: Yes(6) No(1)

Vijay lives in a street with house-numbers 8 up to 100. Lata wants to know at which number Vijay lives.
She asks him: "Is your number larger than 50?"
Vijay answers, but lies.
Upon this, Lata asks: "Is your number a multiple of 4?"
Vijay answers, but lies again.
Then Lata asks: "Is your number a square?"
Vijay answers truthfully.
Upon this, Lata says: "I know your number if you tell me whether the first digit is a 3."
Vijay answers, but now we don't know whether he lies or speaks the truth.
Thereupon, Lata says at which number she thinks Vijay lives, but (of course) she is wrong.
What is Vijay's real house-number?
On a sunny morning, a greengrocer places 200 kilograms of cucumbers in cases in front of his shop. At that moment, the cucumbers are 99% water. In the afternoon, it turns out that it is the hottest day of the year, and as a result, the cucumbers dry out a little bit. At the end of the day, the greengrocer has not sold a single cucumber, and the cucumbers are only 98% water.
How many kilograms of cucumbers has the greengrocer left at the end of the day?
