Time Distance and Speed
A man goes upstream for a distance of 10 km in 5 hrs. Another man goes downstream the same distance of 10 km in 3 hrs. what is the difference in speed of 2 men if the river speed is 0.5 kmph?
1) 1.56
2) 2.45
3) 2.3
4) 1.33
Read Solution (Total 25)
-
- 10/(x-.5) = 5 => x = 2.5
10/(y+.5) = 3 => y = 2.84
(x-y)= 2.83 - 2.5 = .33 km/h - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(47) No(28)
- Sa=10/5=2
Sb=10/3
speed of rever=0.5
then Sa=2-0.5=1.5
Sb=10/3+0.5=3.8
diff in speed=3.8-1.5=2.3 ans=2.3

- since only the diff b/w the speeds of the 2 men is asked the answer will be 1.33 ( 3.33-2= 1.33)
if the speed dff in still water was asked the answer would be .33 - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(25) No(3)
- the speed of man(upstream)=10/5=2 kmph
the speed of man(downstream)=10/3=3.33 kmph
so difference in speed=3.33-2=1.33 kmph
so,river speed is not required in tis case - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(8) No(5)
- 10 km/5 hrs= 2 km/h
10 km/3 hrs= 10/3 km/h
since river speed is 0.5=1/2
so 2+1/2=5/2
thn (10/3)-(1/2)= 20-3/6= 17/6
(17/6)-(5/2)=(17-15)/6= 2/6= 1/3= 0.33. - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(7) No(5)

- up stream 10/5 = 2
speed of stream is 0.5 then 2-0.5 = 1.5
down stream 10/3 =3.333
then 3.33+0.5 =3.833(Stream always follows down stream )
the difference is 3.8333-1.5=2.3 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(3) No(4)

v1-0.5=10/5=2
v1=2.5
for downstrem-
v2+0.5=10/3=3.33
v2=2.83
then diff-

- Upstream case:-
10/(x-0.5)=5
=>x=1.5
Downstream case:-
10/(y+0.5)=3
=>y=2.83
Now,
y-x=2.83-1.5

- in upstream speed of river will be reduced from speed of man and in downstream speed of river will be add to speed of man so answer will be 2.33 i.e. 3)2.3

- upstream ->10km and 5hrs
so 1hr distance will be 2km/hr
downstream->10km and 3hrs
so 1hr distance will be 3.33km/hr
speed of stream=1/2km/hr
speed of 1st men =2-0.5=1.5
speed of 2nd men=3.33+0.5=3.83
difference b/w two men=3.83-1.5=2.3

- let 1st person be x and second person be Y,
relative velocity of x is u-v = 2kmph
relative velocity of y is u+v =3.33kmph
v=0.5kmph(given)
speed of X is 2+0.5 =2.5
speed of Y is 3.33- 0.5= 2.83
difference between their speeds = 2.8 3- 2.5 =0.33 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(2)

- its a correct question
the relative velocity of first person is (2)-(0.5)=1.5
the relative speed of second person is (3.33)+(0.5)=3.83
the difference between speed is(3.83)-(1.5)=2.3
answer is 2.3 - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(6)
- according to seesame ans is 1.56

- Resultant upstream speed = (speed of man) - (speed of river) ==> (10/ 5) - 0.5 = 1.5 km/h
Resultant downstream speed = (speed of man) + (speed of river) ==> (10/ 3) + 0.5 = 3.33 km/h
Hence,
Difference in speed of two men = 3.33 - 1.5 = 2.33 km/h - 8 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
