  Then the total sum spent by the nine people = 30 x 8 + x
  = 240 + x.

  Therefore x - 20 = (240 + x)/9
  Thus, 9x - 180 = 240 + x
  Or, 8x = 420
  Or x = 52.50
  Therefore total money spent = 240 + 52.50 = 292.50
