In what ratio must water mixed with milk to gain 20% by selling the mixture at cost price

• Ratio of milk : Water= 5:1 or ratio of water:milk =1:5
  
  Let milk be 100₹ for 1000 ml
  To hv profit of 20% we has to sell it at 120₹
  So he had 200 ml if water which is free of cost
  So now for milk seller c.p of 1200ml of mixture is 100₹ but customer will take it at 120₹ (1000ml for 100₹)
  So milk =1000 nd water =200
  Milk : Water = 1000/200
  Milk : Water = 5:1
  
  Another mehod is alligation milk of 1₹ water of 0₹ to have 20% profit he has to sell mixture at 1.2₹ so by allegation milk :water = 1/0.2 = 5 : 1

  gain is 20%
  then
  c.p of 1 ltr mixture is (100/120)*1=5/6

• let us assume
  for 1 litre milk,the cost is 100rs
  for 100ml the price is 10rs
  to get 20% gain,he should sell at 120 rs
  instead of selling at 120,he has to reduce 20rs by adding 20rs worth milk with water
  20rs milk quantity is 200ml,so 200ml water is added
  then the water to milk ratio is 200:1000
  the required ratio is 1:5

  44*(45)/2=990
  990+10=1000
  he add 10 two times
