Time Distance and Speed
a man goes upstream for a distance of 10 km in 5 hrs. Another man goes downstream the same distance of 10km in 3 hrs. what is the difference in speeds of two men if the river speed is 0.5 kmph
Read Solution (Total 9)
-
- 10/(x-.5) = 5 => x = 2.5
10/(y+.5) = 3 => y = 2.84
(x-y)= 2.83 - 2.5 = .33 km/h

- dont confuse with difference in speeds of men in still water....
its just difference in speed ...
so speed of 1st man is (10/5)=2 kmph,and
speed of 2nd man is (10/3)kmph
subtracting above two , we get 1.33kmph - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(17) No(8)
- answer comes .33 ..but there was no option of .33 so i marked 1.33 and it was crrct

- Speed of upstream=(10/5)~ 2 km/h
Speed of downstream= (10/3) km/h
since, Speed of river = 0.5 km/h , so 0.5=(10/3 - 2)/2
and we want the difference only so 10/3 - 2 = 4/3 = 1.33 - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(5)
- sounds quite confusing but simple one
distance and time provided find speed in kmph
speed of ist man=10/5=2
10/3=3.333333
subtract the above two(3.33-2)=1.33 - 10 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(2)
- As we know,
Speed downstream = (u + v) km/hr.
Speed upstream = (u - v) km/hr.
So x-.5=2 =>x=2.5
& y+.5=3.33 =>y=2.83
Ans: y-x=.33

- Upstream speed= v1-u= v1-0.5
downstream speed= v2+u= v2+0.5
so,
According to question--- 10/(v1-0.5)=5
v1= 1.5
And Again 10/(v2+0.5)=3
v2=2.83
As in question says v2-v1= 2.83-1.5=1.33 Ans - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(1) No(0)

- upstream>10/u-0.5=5>u=2.5
dwnstrm>10/v+0.5=3>v=3.8
u-v=1.3 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
