A person took part in a cycling race with many others. After pedaling for several minutes, he found that 1/5 th of the racers ahead of him and 5/6 th of the cyclist behind him together formed the total number of participants. How many people participated in the race?

  from data given in the problem ((x/5)+(5x/6)+1)=x
  therefore x=-30

  If x is total number of participants and y are ahead that person,
  then according to given statement
  x = (y/5)+ (x-1-y)*5/6 which means 30x = 6y +25x-25-25y or 5x= -19y-25 which means one of x or y is negative which is not possible.

  as per given condition
  
  x+y+1= x/5 + (5/6)*y which is not possible. Can someone clarify please ?
