Peter got 30%, of the maximum marks in an examination and failed by 10 marks. However, Paul who took the same examination got 40% of the total marks and got 15 marks more than the passing marks. What was the passing marks in the examination?

  peter got 30% of max mark =.3x i.e (x*30/100)
  but he failed by 10 mark
  therefore passing mark i.e y=.3x+10
  now, paul got 40% of max mark=.4x
  but he get 15 marks more than passing mark
  therefore passing mark i.e y= .4x-15
  now from eq (i) n eq(ii)
  .4x-15=.3x+10
  x=250 i.e max mark
  therefore passsing mark(put value of x)
  y=.4x-15=.3x+10= 85

  Equating the passing marks--
  30x+10 = 40x-15

  Hence maximum marks = 100x
